Home, Hope & Service — A Reflection from Dr Mike Rose

This Trustee Week, we are honoured to share a heartfelt reflection from Dr Mike Rose, one of Maundy Relief’s longest-serving trustees and a much-respected figure in the Hyndburn community.

Mike has been part of Maundy Relief for over 15 years, previously serving as Chair of Trustees, and continues to be a guiding voice on our board today. With a background in the NHS and a lifelong commitment to compassionate leadership, partnership, and bridge-building, Mike brings both wisdom and warmth to all he does.

Here, in his own words, Mike reflects on what Maundy Relief means to him and why it remains his touchstone through all stages of life.

“Regardless of where I am, geographically, emotionally, or socially, Maundy Relief has, for many years, been my touchstone, the place where I can be myself and the place where I feel at home. It is a place of warmth and welcome. Many people regard Maundy Relief as their family. Maundy Relief is beautifully nuanced and sophisticated whilst being very uncomplicated.

I have been extremely lucky in the cards I have been given in life, but many are not so fortunate and Maundy Relief is there for those who turn to it, often in great need. It is my genuine pleasure to work alongside such wonderful colleagues and be given the opportunity to make my very modest contribution to caring for our fellow citizens whose circumstances (and resilience) are often humbling.

I have been part of Maundy Relief for 15 years and prior to being a Trustee I had the privilege of contributing to many aspects of its mission. I now try to bring that experience, and that gained in my previous NHS career, to the support of a dedicated, skilled, and fantastic team of staff and volunteers. I am sure I get much more out than I put in!

From a leadership perspective I am interested in bridge-building, partnership, strategy and being a ‘critical friend’ to an organisation that I strongly believe in.”

We are deeply grateful to Mike for his unwavering commitment, compassion, and leadership and for the example he sets in reminding us that service, at its heart, is about humanity and hope.
