Maundy Relief – We work on the frontline in the community by responding immediately to need.

History

The Maundy Relief Story

“There was nowhere else that anyone could go, without having to fulfil certain criteria, without questions, immediately, and if necessary, forever.”

– Sister Dorothy McGregor, Maundy Relief Founder

In 1998 in Accrington three people met by chance in a printer’s shop.

They were Sister Dorothy McGregor, the Rev. Len Singleton and Alan Freeman.

These remarkable people saw what was going on their community, they witnessed a growing division between rich and poor and they joined forces to do something about it.

They started small, making and distributing food parcels from their own homes and they came to realise that many people were also in need of a friendly, non-judgemental ear, someone to hear their stories and just be a friend.

From these small beginnings, Maundy Relief has grown into an established and well regarded provider of social care in the local area.

Sister Dorothy continued to work at Maundy Relief all and every day for the rest of her life and she is still an inspiration to all who knew her. She dedicated her life to the service of others and she set an example to us all.
